Recently, Donald Trump stirred a humorous yet fiery debate simply by suggesting that soccer (as Americans call it) should rightfully be termed ‘football.’ While speaking at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, DC, Trump questioned whether American football—a sport deeply entrenched in our national identity—should carry that name, given that soccer crowns itself with a term that seems, well, more literal.
Now, some may say this is not a topic befitting serious political discourse. However, in an age where cultural identity is hotly contested, even the names of our treasured sports seem to carry undue weight.
