In a blow to common sense and national security, the Senate voted against a bill proposing the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Niger. The bill, introduced by Sen. Rand Paul, aimed to put an end to unauthorized military missions in the region. Despite the fact that several Democrats voted in favor, the bill failed with a vote of 11-86.

Sen. Paul highlighted the absurdity of having over 1,000 troops stationed in Niger while the Middle East is engulfed in chaos. He questioned the rationale behind maintaining a military presence in a country ruled by a military junta and experiencing a coup. It’s clear that the United States should not be seeking out trouble in every corner of the planet.
However, Sens. Ben Cardin and Jim Risch, among the misguided defenders of U.S. involvement in Niger, argued that a withdrawal would weaken regional reconnaissance efforts and provide an opportunity for Russia to increase its influence. It seems they are more concerned with geopolitical chess moves than with the safety and well-being of our troops.
Sen. Paul’s concerns about U.S. military involvement in Niger were further supported by the tragic deaths of four American service members in an ambush by Islamic State militants in 2017. Despite this, some continue to turn a blind eye to the risks involved.
It is disheartening to see our elected officials prioritize political gamesmanship over the lives of our brave men and women in uniform. The vote against this bill is a prime example of how out-of-touch politicians can be when it comes to making rational decisions for our national security. It’s time for our leaders to put America first and end these unnecessary military ventures.
