The White House has jumped in to defend President Joe Biden as accusations fly from former President Donald Trump regarding the rhetoric surrounding threats to democracy. Trump recently suggested that Biden’s relentless labeling of him as a “threat to democracy” could have fueled the motivations of a young gunman who attempted to assassinate him. Now, one might wonder if this was just another case of political theater or a genuine concern from Trump. The apparent lack of self-awareness is almost amusing.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took center stage to assure everyone that the president has been unequivocal regarding political violence. According to her, Biden has consistently preached about the “no place” for violent rhetoric in America. The press secretary highlighted how the president has purportedly called for unity and decency across the board, especially after the recent Butler, Pennsylvania incident where an assassination attempt left everyone shaking their heads in disbelief. Wayne’s World would even be doing a double “not good” here.

Jean-Pierre’s response took a somewhat convoluted path, invoking various instances where Biden addressed political violence, from the January 6 chaos to the attack on Paul Pelosi. It seems Biden’s track record, at least in her eyes, is a robust series of condemnation of violence. Yet, the irony of a president who is constantly bemoaning threats to democracy while simultaneously hanging on to the smudge of political division is hard to miss. One must wonder whether her definition of “proactive” stretches beyond just talking—it certainly seems that way.
Meanwhile, Biden has also landed himself in a bit of hot water after a jab directed at House Speaker Mike Johnson. During a speech commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Biden declared Johnson’s views “dead on arrival,” followed by Johnson labeling Biden’s Supreme Court reforms similarly. In an admirable show of political misdirection, the press secretary deftly dodged questions about whether the president misspoke, claiming that not only did he not misspeak, but that he was expressing his thoughts perfectly. Talk about a straight face under pressure.
Meanwhile, Trump has been busy rallying support and suggesting, quite dramatically, that the ongoing Democratic narrative could drive young and troubled individuals to violent extremes. While the narrative continues to spiral, the finger-pointing between parties seems relentless. After all, in Biden’s world, everyone else is a threat, while his administration sails smoothly on its expertise in political rhetoric. The irony of a president allegedly championing unity while using incendiary language that divides is apparently lost on the White House.
The tangled web of accusations, reassurances, and political rivalries continues to unfold as both sides throw kitchen sinks at one another. Meanwhile, Americans watching this spectacle may be left feeling like they are spectators in a poor reality show, wondering if their elected officials might finally put down the mudslinging and address the issues at hand—or if they will simply keep throwing shade, hoping the American people are too distracted by the clown show to notice the real threats looming on the horizon.
