In an unexpected development, the White House has pledged to pose "challenging inquiries" to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during President Joe Biden's visit to Israel. While Biden's journey was initially intended to express solidarity with Israel in its battle against the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, recent allegations implicating Israel in an explosion at a Gaza City hospital appear to have altered the administration's approach. The White House has committed to investigating the incident without extending an immediate presumption of innocence to Israel.
This shift in diplomatic tone raises concerns as it appears to weaken our support for a vital ally while bolstering those who seek to discredit Israel. It is crucial to recall that Hamas is the principal aggressor in this conflict, intentionally targeting civilians and launching attacks from civilian-populated areas. In contrast, Israel possesses the lawful right and responsibility to defend itself against these acts of terrorism.
Moreover, the White House's declaration that a "zero" level of civilian casualties should be the objective is deemed impractical and disregards the complexities of warfare. While it is undeniably tragic when civilians are harmed, international law acknowledges that some degree of risk to civilians may be inevitable when pursuing legitimate military objectives. Subjecting Israel to an unattainable standard while overlooking the war crimes committed by Hamas is unjust.
It is indeed disheartening to observe the White House embracing such a critical stance towards Israel and refraining from offering comprehensive support to our ally. This approach conveys a disconcerting message to the international community and diminishes America's standing in the Middle East. Israel merits unwavering support, not grueling inquiries and skepticism. President Biden must reassert our commitment to Israel's security and adopt a resolute position against the terrorists of Hamas.
