Zelensky Extends Term Amid War With Russia Postpones Elections Indefinitely

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s presidential term was set to end on May 20. However, due to the ongoing conflict with Russia and the imposition of martial law, Zelensky is continuing to stay in power. Martial law, which was declared after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has suspended all presidential, parliamentary, and local elections.

Zelensky emphasized the need to focus on the war and prioritize defending the country, stating that now is not the time for political disagreements. He highlighted the challenges of organizing elections, including the diversion of resources from defense efforts and the large number of Ukrainians who have fled the country due to the invasion.

Despite criticism from some in the West, including concerns about the allocation of U.S. taxpayer funds, Zelensky’s decision to postpone elections is supported by a majority of Ukrainians. According to a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, over 80% of Ukrainians believe that elections should only be held after the war ends, reflecting widespread public sentiment in favor of focusing on the ongoing conflict.

While Zelensky’s popularity as a wartime leader remains high, there has been a decline in trust in the president as the conflict continues and political unity shows signs of strain. Nevertheless, Zelensky’s leadership during the war has earned him significant support among the Ukrainian population.

Critics have accused Zelensky of acting as a dictator by suspending elections and banning opposition parties. However, Zelensky has emphasized the need to prioritize national defense amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. The decision to extend his term and postpone elections has sparked debate and controversy, with some questioning the principles of democracy and the allocation of financial aid to Ukraine.
