The Biden Administration is reportedly considering a new amnesty plan that would provide a path to legal status for over a million unauthorized immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens. The proposed initiative, known as the “Parole in Place” plan, would shield eligible individuals from deportation and grant them work permits as long as they have been living in the U.S. for at least ten years and are married to a U.S. citizen.
The plan aims to streamline the process for obtaining permanent legal status and U.S. citizenship for beneficiaries by removing barriers in current immigration laws. Additionally, the administration is also working on a plan to ease the process for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and other unauthorized immigrants to request waivers and obtain temporary visas, according to reports from CBS News.

The anticipated announcement coincides with the 12th anniversary of the DACA executive order, which shields over 530,000 unauthorized immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as minors from deportation. Critics argue that the “Parole in Place” plan is an attempt by the Democratic Party to garner support ahead of the upcoming election.
Republican lawmakers have voiced opposition to the proposed amnesty plan, with Senator James Lankford (R-OK) criticizing the administration’s handling of the border and expressing concern that the plan would exacerbate the existing immigration crisis. The recent surge in illegal border crossings has prompted calls for stricter immigration policies to address the influx of unauthorized immigrants entering the country.
