In a shocking turn of events, the latest Washington Post/ABC News national poll has sent Democrats into a panic as President Joe Biden’s approval ratings continue to plummet. Although it’s important to note that this poll may be an outlier, it still serves as a wake-up call for Democrats who were already feeling uneasy about their chances in the upcoming 2024 election.
According to the poll, Trump is now ahead of Biden by a significant nine-point margin among registered voters. This is devastating news for the White House, as Biden’s job approval rating sits a daunting 19 points underwater. Americans are expressing their dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the economy and immigration, with his ratings hitting career lows.
What’s even more alarming for Democrats is that a record number of Americans say they have become worse off under Biden’s presidency. The majority, a whopping 74%, also believe that Biden is too old for another term. These findings present major hurdles that Biden will have to overcome if he chooses to run for reelection.
Even on the economy, which Biden claims is thriving under his policies, the American public disagrees. Only 30% approve of his economic performance, and a mere 23% approve of his handling of immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border. The intensity of disapproval is staggering, with 45% of respondents strongly disapproving of Biden’s work overall.
Given these abysmal numbers, it’s no wonder that 40% of those surveyed say they would primarily blame Biden and the Democrats in Congress if a government shutdown were to occur at month’s end. The fact that Republicans are not shouldering the blame shows just how dissatisfied Americans are with the current administration.
The White House insists that “Bidenomics is working,” but the numbers clearly tell a different story. Three out of four people surveyed said they were worse off, a stark contrast to the administration’s claims of success. This disconnect between the people’s reality and the official narrative only reinforces the doubts and disillusionment the public is experiencing.

While some analysts argue that these poll results may be outliers, caution is certainly warranted. Trump and Biden are both well-known figures with firmly-formed public perceptions. Therefore, it is possible that these early numbers may have some predictive value, despite being ridiculously early in the election cycle.
These poll numbers also raise questions about the potential impact of other Republican candidates. For instance, Nikki Haley performs relatively well against Biden, possibly due to her lower name recognition. However, she may also represent a more appealing ‘generic’ Republican in voters’ eyes. Furthermore, the poll reveals concerns among voters about Biden’s age and health, as well as potential involvement in his son Hunter’s business dealings.
As conservatives, we shouldn’t get complacent with these poll results. While they provide a glimmer of hope for Republicans, it is vital that we stay focused and hold Biden accountable for his failures. The 2024 election is still a long way off, and anything can happen. But if these numbers are any indication, the Democrats have a rough road ahead.
