Joe Biden is set to deliver a speech at the Democratic National Convention on its opening night, and if Sen. Amy Klobuchar is to be believed, he’s in for a love fest that could rival a high school reunion. Klobuchar, in a bid to stoke excitement, predicted that attendees will shower Biden with affection and possibly even tears of joy as he saunters into the convention hall. This enthusiasm, however, seems misplaced given the recent developments in Biden’s own political career.
Just a month ago, Biden made the unprecedented move of stepping aside from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. It raises the question: if he left the race, how much “love” can he realistically expect from the crowd? Perhaps the attendees are just excited to be reminded of the glory days of Hail to the Chief, even if those days seem to be fading faster than a cheap campaign sign on a windy day.

According to Klobuchar, Biden’s speech will focus on the supposedly heroic defense of democracy that he has delivered throughout his presidency. Such claims may leave many scratching their heads; after all, what does upholding democracy really look like when inflation is soaring, crime is rising, and the border is in chaos? Biden is no knight in shining armor, but perhaps Democrats view him more as a trusty sidekick—always there to save the day, even if no one is quite sure from what.
Once Biden steps off the stage, the DNC will showcase some heavyweight Democratic names including First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and past presidents Obama and Bill Clinton. One can only wonder what sort of nostalgic speeches await from these seasoned politicians who have long since utilized their “change” currency. It’s almost like a reunion for the political fossils of yesteryear, with all the enthusiasm of a family gathering where the awkward uncle shows up.
While the VIPs bask in their Democratic glory, the backdrop of the event looks to be anything but celebratory. With protests anticipated in response to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, it’s likely that the DNC will double as a platform for anti-Israel sentiments rather than a celebration of democratic ideals. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has acknowledged the reality of protests infiltrating the convention, potentially turning it into a hotbed of political theater that is all too characteristic of modern Democratic gatherings.
With Klobuchar’s predictions and the DNC’s intense focus on “democracy,” one thing is clear: the Democrats are hoping for a show of unity amid a backdrop of chaos. Whether they’re truly prepared for the tumult that awaits is a different matter altogether, but it certainly makes for interesting television.
