The Biden-Harris administration’s scramble to evacuate Afghan refugees during the chaotic withdrawal has come back to bite them in a rather explosive way. As if the ordeal wasn’t fraught enough, the Justice Department announced that one of those hurriedly admitted Afghans is now facing serious charges in connection with a terror plot on American soil. The timing couldn’t be worse, given that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have been sounding the alarm bells since the fall of Kabul.
The unfortunate individual at the center of this turmoil is Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old Afghan who was granted entry into the U.S. under the dubious umbrella of Operation Allies Refuge. His warm welcome came with a side of potential terrorism, as he was charged with conspiring to support the Islamic State’s nefarious activities. This is precisely what happens when a government prioritizes speed over security. In this case, it appears that “urgent” refugee vetting may have meant handing out passes with little regard for background checks.

Various members of Congress have described Tawhedi’s alleged plot as a wake-up call—though it bears more resemblance to a bone-rattling alarm. Several have openly questioned how someone labeled a “potentially significant security concern” was allowed into the U.S. in the first place. The Homeland Security’s watchdog has raised red flags about the administration’s vetting process, citing numerous refugees as having connections to terrorist organizations like ISIS. With the specter of terrorism hanging over the upcoming Election Day, the panic in Washington is palpable.
Senator Ron Johnson, a well-known critic of the administration’s refugee policy, articulated a sentiment shared by many: this situation could be just a glimpse of a much larger problem. Those in charge have been tiptoeing around a considerable national security threat, and the apparent nonchalance displayed by the Biden-Harris duo towards the vetting process might be likened to playing with fire. It raises serious questions about the administration’s commitment to keeping Americans safe.
Even the previously uninformed public seems to be catching on. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green emphasized the need for policy manufacturers to shift their focus from political virtue signaling to observance of actual national security protocols. The sheer volume of evacuees and the alarming number linked to potential risks has left many Americans wondering how this administration continues to leave national borders unguarded while allowing in individuals with unknown backgrounds.
With Tawhedi allegedly researching ways to carry out attacks and even planning to target populous events, it’s hard not to appreciate the irony of an administration hell-bent on appeasing social justice concerns while overlooking the basic tenets of safeguarding the nation. The charges against Tawhedi aren’t merely isolated incidents but part of a broader spectrum of failed policies that may ultimately embolden extremists. It’s a mess, and with millions of undocumented immigrants also flowing across the border, there’s plenty of blame to spread around when things inevitably go south. The administration’s misguided oversight leaves citizens in precarious territory, where threats loom larger than political correctness.
