Van Jones, a CNN political commentator known for his liberal views, has expressed concerns about President Joe Biden’s chances for re-election in 2024. Jones admitted that while he may ultimately vote for Biden in the next election, he feels that many voters, including Democrats, see Biden as too old for the job. He compared Biden to a beloved but aging grandparent who may not be fit for a high-stress position for another six years. Jones believes that these whispers and worries about Biden’s age are starting to show up in the data and that people are scared to openly discuss these concerns. While the economy may improve over the next year, Biden’s weak standing among certain groups and the fear of a worsening economy could impact his chances at a second term.

This sentiment was echoed by Jim Messina, the former campaign manager for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election. Messina reassured fellow Democrats that despite the challenges Biden is currently facing, the election in 2024 will be close no matter who the Republican nominee is. He even admitted that former President Donald Trump could have a strong chance of winning. Messina’s presentation highlighted various factors that suggest the sky isn’t falling for Democrats just yet, but he acknowledged that historically, Democrats tend to be pessimistic and believe negative predictions about their own party.
While it may be too early to make final projections, both Jones and Messina’s comments highlight the concerns surrounding Biden’s re-election prospects. As one of the weakest incumbents in recent years, Biden’s foundation for a 2024 run is not stable. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether news favors Biden or compounds the existing baggage he carries, such as failed promises, a lackluster economy, and rising inflation. Ultimately, Democrats are currently left with no choice but to rally behind Biden and hope for the best.
