President Joe Biden made waves on Tuesday by sending an email to nearly 1 million student borrowers, letting them know that their loans had been forgiven through the steps he has taken over the past three years.
The White House disclosed that Biden’s email reached 813,000 borrowers whose loans had previously been forgiven by Biden’s actions. The White House, however, failed to explain how these fortunate borrowers were chosen to receive an email from the president. Perhaps the White House chose the borrowers by flipping a coin or playing a round of rock-paper-scissors. Who knows?

In the email, Biden expressed his determination to fix the “failed” student loan program and proclaimed that his administration has successfully delivered on that promise. “For too long, the student loan program failed to live up to its commitments,” Biden wrote. “I vowed to fix that, and I’m proud that my administration has delivered on that promise.” He continued by stating that he hopes the loan forgiveness will provide some relief and help borrowers support themselves and their families or pursue their life plans – because, you know, who needs to repay their debts? Let’s just all live for free! Yay!
Biden’s administration has annulled a whopping $127 billion in loan debt for nearly 3.6 million borrowers so far. After the Supreme Court knocked down Biden’s unilateral student loan debt forgiveness, the White House launched the “SAVE” debt forgiveness plan and made additional changes to income-driven repayment programs. The administration asserts that 5.5 million people have enrolled in SAVE programs, with nearly 3 million of them qualifying for a monthly payment of $0. How convenient!
In his email, Biden hailed SAVE as “the most affordable repayment plan in history” and claimed that it will prevent balances from growing due to interest. He assured borrowers that he will never cease fighting for American families and will always strive to ensure that our democracy delivers for the American people. It sounds like he’s promising the world and then some! We’ll see if he can make good on such grandiose claims – or if it’s just a bunch of hot air.
Biden’s email also conveniently coincides with his declining support in 2024 election polling against former President Donald Trump. Polls have indicated that the president is struggling in battleground states and may even be losing support among minorities and young voters. Hmm. Could this timely email have something to do with swaying public opinion back in Biden’s favor? Just a thought!
