In just two days, California will finish doling out the moolah to low-income folks through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the month of March. It’s like Christmas for people who are just plain hungry!
The handouts start on the first of the month and keep on coming until the 10th. If you’ve got a fancy case number, then the date you get your benefits depends on that number. It’s like a secret code to unlock your food money.
For example, if your case number ends in 1, you got your CalFresh benefits on March 1. And the good times keep on rollin’ until Sunday, when those with a case number ending in 0 will finally get their share of the pie.
Now, the amount of dough a household gets depends on all sorts of things like how many mouths there are to feed, how much money the household brings in, and any extra stuff they own. The most anyone can get is $291 for a one-person crib, $973 for a family of four, and a whopping $1,751 for a gaggle of eight. And if there’re more than eight of you, then they throw in an extra $219 for each extra person. It’s like hitting the jackpot, but for groceries!
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a cool 13% of California’s population, which adds up to a whopping 5 million people, cash in on CalFresh assistance every month. That’s a whole lot of free grub!
