The Democrats are sending out a distress signal that even the Titanic might have preferred to ignore. With President Joe Biden sidelined due to COVID-19 and a political rebellion that could make a toddler’s tantrum seem dignified, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to take the reins. Biden, despite his attempts to cling to political life, has apparently decided that enough is enough. This decision seems less like a strategic retreat and more like a graceless dive off the political cliff, all in response to his own dire debate performance against Donald Trump back in June.
The chaos roiling within the Democratic Party can be traced back to that debate. Anyone who watched the display couldn’t help but cringe at Biden’s lackluster performance, which made a traffic jam appear thrilling in comparison. It’s no secret that the debate showcased more awkwardness than a blind date at a clown convention. The fact that the President of the United States couldn’t seem to find his footing not only led to Democrat distress but seemed to confirm what many had suspected about his fitness to hold office. A debate against Kamala Harris is now on the horizon, and one has to wonder, will she do a better job of skirting around questions than her boss?
As for Trump, he appears to be licking his chops at the prospect of squaring off against Harris. Having previously labeled her a “weirdo,” Trump is likely itching to capitalize on her lack of substance. With her penchant for peculiar statements—like claiming buses have a predictable route, a revelation that surely shocked no one—Harris is set to be a target for Trump’s sharp-tongued jabs. The ridiculousness of her commentary on the Ukraine War and notable slip-ups regarding European travels only serve as more ammunition for the former president.

Trump’s campaign team is apparently maintaining some hesitation about debating Harris, given that their original agreement was drafted with Biden in mind. With the president skipping out, the question arises: why should Trump engage with an “illegitimate candidate”? It so happens that the GOP is simmering with frustration over the chaos within the Democratic ranks. With the election clock ticking and less than 16 weeks remaining, the debate strategist in Trump might just decide this isn’t worth his time.
At the upcoming Democratic Convention, it’s anyone’s guess whether the party will elect a new leader without the circus of past years, or if the proceedings will dissolve into utter madness. One thing is crystal clear: as Harris steps into Biden’s oversized shoes—which may or may not contain an inordinate amount of cobwebs—it will be a spectacle worth tuning in to. The once-reassured Democratic façade of control is crumbling, leaving a gaping hole that only further proves they are more suited for Kraft Singles than Swiss cheese when it comes to satisfactory leadership.
