Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro Unveils Star-Studded Stalin-Era Drama

The Daily Wire just dropped a trailer that will make cultural gatekeepers spit their coffee. The film is called Confession, and the teaser makes one thing clear: this is not your usual streaming-side hustle. The project pairs a surprising, star-studded cast with an art-house director and a script from Daily Wire co-founder and editor emeritus Ben Shapiro. It’s headed to a Warsaw festival premiere, then to a one-night U.S. theater event and the Daily Wire streaming platform this November.

What the teaser revealed about Confession

Confession is a Stalin-era, single-location drama set in Moscow in 1938. The story centers on a former literature professor forced into the Lubyanka prison and faced with a brutal test of conscience. The director is Václav Marhoul, known for serious, visually striking films, and the cinematographer is Peter Menzies Jr. Ben Shapiro is credited as the screenwriter and a lead creative voice. The film reportedly premieres at the Warsaw Film Festival mid-October and will play in about 100 U.S. theaters for one night, with a same-day debut on the Daily Wire’s streaming service on November 11, Veterans Day.

Star power where you least expected it

Rob Lowe and James Franco headline the cast, joined by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Nolte, Kodi Smit‑McPhee, Emile Hirsch, Brad Dourif, Dean Norris, and Richard Brake. That is not a B-list roll call. Several cast members are Oscar or Emmy nominees. The surprising thing is not just the talent, but that these actors signed on to a project produced by a conservative media company. That upends the stereotype that serious actors only work within a left-leaning studio system. If nothing else, Confession proves that good scripts and strong directors can still attract top talent — even when the distributor wears a different label.

This movie is being billed as a meditation on faith, morality, and human dignity. Shapiro’s own description calls it “deeply rooted in faith, morality, virtue, hardship, and most of all, what it means to be a free and decent human being.” Add a Prague-born director with an art-house sensibility and you get a film that demands critics show up with more than a hot take. Expect social media to light up with predictable outrage and partisan hot air. But the smarter play will be to watch and judge the film on its own terms — and then let the arguments begin.

Confession will be a clear test for the Daily Wire’s move into serious filmmaking. If the Warsaw premiere gets a polite applause and the Nov. 11 release finds an audience, conservative media will have proven it can recruit talent, fund quality production, and shape cultural content on its own terms. If you like political drama with moral stakes, mark your calendar for the trailer and the release. If you prefer taking moral positions from Twitter, well — you’ll still have something to complain about. Either way, Confession just made the culture wars more interesting.
