Dems Flex Arms at Biden: Is Israel’s Anti-Hamas Crusade in Jeopardy?

President Joe Biden’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas is causing division among congressional Democrats. Some members of the left are echoing the accusations made by the Arab world against Israel’s military operations. The conflict began when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in the death of over 1,000 people, and Israel responded swiftly with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Now, Israel has initiated a ground incursion to eliminate Hamas terrorists.

Critics argue that Israel’s response has been disproportionate and has harmed Palestinian civilians. President Biden has expressed his support for Israel but has also urged them to avoid civilian casualties and provide humanitarian aid. However, certain Democrats are speaking out against Israel’s handling of the operation, indicating a potential shift in the party’s stance on the conflict.

President Biden is facing increasing pressure as some of his Democratic allies voice concerns about Israel’s actions. Despite calls for a cease-fire, Biden has resisted and refrained from commenting on Israel’s conduct in the war. Other Democrats have criticized the slow delivery of humanitarian aid, the communication blackout, and the rising death toll among Palestinian civilians. They are also questioning Israel’s objectives in the ground assault.

A group of Democratic senators, including Chris Murphy, Chris Van Hollen, and Jeff Merkley, has called on Biden to work with Israel, Egypt, and the United Nations to provide fuel to Gaza amidst the ongoing crisis. The criticisms from within his party have created new challenges for Biden, who may be held accountable for Israel’s actions due to his support.

White House officials, such as National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, claim they are working to hold Israel accountable and share some concerns expressed by Democrats. However, the situation on the ground is complicated by the fact that Hamas operatives are using civilians as human shields. This makes it difficult for Israel to target Hamas without causing collateral damage.

Meanwhile, those against Israel and in favor of Hamas have decried what they perceive as an internet blackout attributed to Israel, although internet and phone services were reportedly restored. The Squad, consisting of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar, has been vocal in their anti-Israel stance. However, the shift among non-Squad members in the Democratic Party is noteworthy. If more Democrats withdraw their support for Israel, it could influence Biden’s approach to the conflict and deepen the party’s divide on the Israel/Palestinian issue.
