The Department of Justice just put a spotlight on a problem too many on the left have treated like a bad rumor: noncitizens on California voter rolls. The DOJ announced charges against 28 noncitizens who were illegally registered to vote — and some of them actually cast ballots. This is not a small paperwork glitch. It is a crack in the system that could get wider if state officials keep shrugging.
DOJ charges and why the count matters
Federal prosecutors say 28 noncitizens were found on California voter rolls and charged, with several alleged to have voted. The DOJ also said it is reviewing thousands of other alleged illegal voting cases across the country. California is already facing a separate federal lawsuit over more than 20,000 alleged noncitizens registered to vote. Put plainly: this is not an isolated headline. It is part of a growing pattern of sloppy voter-roll maintenance and weak verification.
Why election integrity should not be optional
When voter rolls include people who are not citizens, confidence in elections drops. That is not a partisan opinion; it is common sense. Citizens deserve clean voter lists and fair elections. Allowing mistakes or lax checks to pile up, especially in a state as big as California, invites chaos and gives cynics every reason to doubt outcomes. If rules mean anything, they must apply to everyone — not just the voters some find convenient.
Simple fixes, stubborn resistance
There are obvious solutions: better citizenship verification, routine cleaning of voter rolls, cooperation between state and federal agencies, and firm enforcement when laws are broken. Yet California officials have resisted meaningful changes and even fought the DOJ in court. That resistance looks less like protecting voters and more like protecting the status quo. If a state will not secure its voter rolls, Washington must step in and demand accountability.
At minimum, the 28 charges should be a wake-up call. Voters of every party should want rules enforced and elections honest. Conservatives should press for reforms that protect the ballot box. Liberals should do the same — unless they prefer talking points over truth. Either way, allowing noncitizens to remain on voter rolls is unacceptable. Clean up the lists, enforce the laws, and stop pretending this is just a technicality when it affects the trust we all need in our elections.
