Remember a time when you could share an opinion, cite facts, or even post a meme without getting a “fact-check” sticker slapped on it? Yeah, neither can I. It feels like fact-checkers crawled out of the woodwork the moment people started questioning the mainstream narrative. The truth has always been out there, but it wasn't until the rise of independent voices, bloggers, and social media that the truth became harder to contain. That’s when fact-checkers, conveniently funded by big corporations and left-leaning billionaires, swooped in to “correct” the record.
For years, the media held a monopoly on what information was considered credible. ABC, CNN, The New York Times—these were the trusted names, and if it didn’t come from them, it didn’t happen. But then the internet changed everything. Suddenly, regular Americans could question official narratives and bring up inconvenient facts that didn't get air time on the nightly news. With the rise of independent media, from conservative blogs to alternative news outlets, the establishment felt threatened. And when the mainstream narrative began to fray at the edges, the fact-checkers emerged, acting like referees to call fouls on anything that challenged the approved story.
It’s no coincidence that fact-checkers started gaining prominence around 2016, the year Trump rocked the political establishment. His presidency and the populist movement that followed proved one thing: the media’s grip on the truth was slipping. People started realizing they were being fed selective information, and they began seeking out alternative news sources. The fact-checkers then stepped in as the establishment’s last line of defense, working overtime to protect the official narrative. You might notice that the things they “fact-check” are almost always conservative viewpoints or news that questions the leftist agenda.
The problem with these so-called fact-checkers is that they rarely just check facts. Instead, they often spin the facts to fit a particular narrative. They’ll label something “misleading” because it doesn’t include some obscure context or flag a post as “partly false” for presenting a different angle. Let’s be honest, if fact-checkers were really concerned with the truth, they’d be calling out lies on both sides of the aisle. But strangely enough, it’s usually conservatives, libertarians, or independent thinkers who get the brunt of their attention. Maybe because these voices are the biggest threat to the mainstream agenda.
Of course, the biggest joke is that many of these fact-checkers are funded by the very people who benefit from controlling the narrative. Facebook partners with organizations like the Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), which is financially supported by the likes of George Soros and other leftist megadonors. When Big Tech and Big Media are in bed with the fact-checking industry, you can guess whose “truth” they’re protecting. It’s not about ensuring accuracy; it’s about maintaining control over what the public sees and believes.
