Jim McCollum, the father of Marine Corps Lance Corporal Rylee McCollum—one of the 13 service members tragically killed in the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing—has decided that it’s time for Vice President Kamala Harris to account for her complete lack of leadership over the past few years. During an interview on the “War Room” podcast, McCollum took a direct shot at Harris, asserting that an absence of action and responsibility has marked her tenure in office. One might almost feel sorry for the Vice President, except it’s hard to muster sympathy for someone who’s spent more time dodging accountability than leading.
McCollum’s primary question for Harris is straightforward: where has she been amid all the chaos surrounding the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan? Considering she’s been in the vice presidency for nearly four years, it boggles the mind that she has little to show for it. McCollum underscores a glaring truth—if she is indeed proud of the decisions made, then she should be prepared to defend them publicly and transparently, not hide in the shadows, hoping that nobody notices her absence.

To make matters worse, Harris has recently tried to play the moral high ground by criticizing former President Donald Trump for honoring the fallen service members with a public tribute. McCollum’s reaction to her statement questions not just her timing but her authority to label such a heartfelt gesture as a “political stunt.” This, after all, is coming from a Vice President who conveniently waited until the dust settled on a troubling military evacuation to step in front of the cameras and make remarks. It raises the question of whether Harris understands the severity of the sacrifices made by these service members or if she’s merely playing a game of politics.
In a classic display of sidestepping, Harris confirmed that she was the “last person in the room” when decisions were made regarding troop withdrawal. While that might sound like a badge of honor in some circles, it comes off as a damning indictment of her failure to steer the ship in the right direction when it mattered most. McCollum’s frustration is palpable; he wants to know how someone in such a significant position can be absent at such a crucial time for the nation.
In response to Harris’s attempt to spin the narrative, Trump has issued videos featuring fathers and mothers of the fallen, standing in stark contrast to Harris’s lackluster defense. This ensemble of grieving parents is precisely the kind of raw accountability that the American public deserves to hear. While the Vice President gives speeches, these families remember their loved ones every day, and their pain is compounded every time someone like Harris downplays the tragedy for political gain. The American people are wise enough to see through the smoke and mirrors; it’s time for Harris to own her role in this saga if only to satisfy a nation that demands genuine leadership.
