Dr. Anthony Fauci, the man who has been front and center in America’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has finally agreed to speak to a House subcommittee. This will be his first testimony in the House since Republicans took over the majority in January. The long-awaited testimony comes after nine months of negotiations for Fauci’s appearance.

According to a letter from Republican Rep. Brad Wenstrup, Fauci will appear behind closed doors on January 8-9 for a transcribed interview that will include seven hours of testimony per day. While a public hearing is also scheduled, the date has yet to be determined.
In a news release, Wenstrup stated that Fauci’s testimony is crucial for the subcommittee’s investigations into various aspects of the pandemic, including the origin of COVID-19, coercive mandates, gain-of-function research, and scientific censorship. He emphasized the need for honesty during Fauci’s testimonies and called for him to address the controversies that have arisen throughout the pandemic.
The release also mentioned Fauci’s alleged knowledge of dangerous gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China, prior to the emergence of the virus. Critics have accused him of remaining silent to the public on this matter. Furthermore, Fauci has faced criticism for downplaying the possibility of the virus leaking from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, despite his involvement in funding research conducted by the institute.
Fauci retired from his position as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and his role as President Biden’s chief medical adviser at the end of last year. The select subcommittee believes that Fauci’s influence may be the reason the CIA has not offered a conclusion on the origins of the virus. The committee has recently acquired whistleblower testimony alleging that the CIA potentially skewed its COVID-19 origins review.
Overall, Fauci’s testimony is expected to shed light on several controversial aspects of the pandemic response, and constituents are demanding truthful and transparent explanations from the nation’s top public health leader.
