George Clooney, once a stalwart cheerleader for President Biden, has made quite the 180-degree turn recently. After issuing a not-so-gentle nudge for Biden to step aside in a New York Times op-ed, Clooney appears to be all-in on Vice President Kamala Harris as the chosen one. It’s classic Hollywood politics where a few weeks can feel more like a political lifetime, especially when the stakes involve supporting a now presumptive presidential nominee.
In a stunning twist, Clooney sang the praises of President Biden’s “true leadership” while simultaneously preparing the red-carpet welcome mat for Harris. One would think he’s auditioning for the role of the official Democratic hype man. Clooney is touting Biden as the savior of democracy—because what Hollywood does best is keep the melodrama alive as they continue to pour cash into Democratic campaigns, apparently hoping their contributions will somehow brew up some magic. Of course, anyone who’s been paying attention knows that this strain of “leadership” often hails from lofty ideals rather than actual results.
Not that Clooney isn’t fond of a good fundraiser—he managed to rake in an eye-popping $28 million for Biden’s reelection campaign in June, the most any event has ever pulled in for the Democratic Party. However, Clooney’s patronage has come with a side order of cold reality. He casually pointed out that the man taking the stage was not the vibrant Biden of 2010 or even 2020, suggesting that he maybe, just maybe, isn’t the same candidate that Democratic donors rallied behind. This certainly raises eyebrows, considering Clooney is the one rolling out the blue carpet for Biden despite steady evidence that even his most loyal fans are starting to question his fitness for office.

Clooney’s critique doesn’t stand alone. There are murmurs in Tinseltown, where other Hollywood elites like Barbara Streisand and Spike Lee are throwing their weight behind Harris. Together, they have formed a cadre of liberal super supporters, eager to elevate the fun campaign antics as Harris solidifies her candidacy by securing enough Democratic delegates. So many big names jumping on the Harris bandwagon does raise the question: Is this an endorsement or a lifeboat for a sinking ship?
As Harris inches closer to her historic candidacy, it’s hard not to chuckle at the irony. With Biden’s own party questioning his viability, the crown has now been handed to her—albeit without a clear signal that she can steer the ship in the right direction. One can only wonder if Clooney’s embrace of Harris is a sign of confidence or sheer desperation as Democrats scramble to maintain the façade of unity. Either way, the political roller coaster rides on, fueled by cash and celebrity endorsements as the party prepares for yet another spectacle in the lead-up to the general election.
