GOP Elitists Pen Another Anti-Trump Letter No One Will Read

Another day, another group of GOP has-beens gathering to pen a letter lamenting the existence of Donald Trump. This year’s edition comes courtesy of a staggering 200 former staffers from the political elite who once served under names like Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, and John McCain. Clearly, they have an abundance of time on their hands to recycle old grievances instead of engaging with the real electorate. It’s hard to believe anyone cares what this crew has to say, as they attempt to hold onto their relevance by warning America about the supposed dangers of Trump’s return to the White House.

In an impressive display of political nostalgia, these ex-aides have decided to revive a letter from 2020 that was more forgettable than a soggy cracker. They not only reiterated their backhanded support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz but also seemed shocked—shocked!—by the concept of Project 2025. Apparently, the very notion that government institutions might be defunded is enough to send these former gatekeepers into a tizzy. It’s curious that their fears focus on programs like the Department of Education and National Public Radio, institutions often perceived as underwhelming and mismanaged.

The so-called experts in this letter have mastered the art of inflammatory rhetoric, suggesting that a second Trump presidency would send the democratic process into a death spiral, all while continuing the tired narrative of Trump being cozy with dictators. They seem blissfully unaware that during Trump’s presidency, no new countries fell victim to Putin’s ambitions. Instead, these alarmists want everyone to forget the chaos that reigned under the Obama and Biden administrations when Putin was practically given a free pass.

Unsurprisingly, the authors of this letter also treat January 6 as their golden egg. They pin the blame for the events at the Capitol squarely on Trump, despite the overwhelming evidence indicating he was not the puppet master everyone wants him to be. These same people like to talk about Trump’s “chaotic” presidency while ignoring the incessant interruptions by the #Resistance and the circus surrounding the impeachment processes that were more about political theater than justice.

A delightful highlight in this continuing saga of disgruntled former aides is the appearance of Reed Galen. Here’s a gentleman who helped push the narrative that Trump is a danger to democracy while simultaneously partnering with the Lincoln Project—a group that has become synonymous with hypocrisy and self-interest. Their letter’s closure attempts to rally support for a new political direction, notably one that holds dear the values of consensus and unity, while conveniently ignoring those who would have to side with their opposition.

The real question remains: do these political relics really think anyone still values their opinions? Given the apparent disconnect from the sentiments of the average voter, it’s safe to say that the letter serves more as a nostalgic trip down memory lane for its authors than a serious political statement. As they wring their hands and call for so-called brave stands against Trump, it seems all they’re really achieving is making a case for why outsiders in the GOP are finally getting a well-deserved shot at the limelight.
