Jill Stein, the notorious Green Party member, continues to cause headaches for Democrats. Ever since the 2016 election, she has been blamed, alongside Russia, for Hillary Clinton’s loss to Donald Trump. It has become a popular belief in media circles that Stein was the reason Clinton lost. Politico even ran an article in 2020 with the headline “Jill Stein cost Hillary dearly in 2016. Democrats are still writing off her successor.” The article pointed out that if Stein’s voters had chosen Clinton in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, Clinton might have won the election.

Although there have been disputes about the impact Stein actually had, Clinton herself seems to agree with the narrative. In 2019, she referred to Stein and Tulsi Gabbard as “Russian assets,” accusing them of colluding with Vladimir Putin to disrupt Democratic chances in presidential races. Now, with the possibility of RFK Jr. and Cornel West running as Independent party candidates and a primary challenge from Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips, Stein has announced her candidacy once again. This news is causing panic among Democrats who are already worried about Joe Biden’s chances in 2024.
Stein’s campaign announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, stated that she is running “to offer people a choice outside the failed two-party system.” She wants to prioritize a pro-worker, anti-war, and climate emergency agenda. The Very Online Left is already sounding the alarm, blaming those who voted for Stein in 2016 for the current state of affairs. Some Democrats are comparing Stein to a “bad rash” and pushing conspiracy theories that she is a plant for Republicans, particularly Trump.
While the impact of RFK Jr.’s potential candidacy is up for debate among Republicans, it’s undeniable that Stein’s entry into the race will make Biden’s reelection campaign even more challenging. With her strong far-left credentials, she poses a threat to Biden’s appeal to progressive voters. All of this sets the stage for a fascinating and unpredictable 2024 presidential election.
