He called “Operation Epic Fury” an “epic success,” said the U.S. achieved its goal of stopping Iran’s nuclear capability, and urged that the conflict be “brought to a resolution.” He also tied the closed Strait of Hormuz to higher gas and grocery prices and said reopening it would ease pain at the pump. Those are big words — now come the big questions.
Why Johnson’s Pivot Matters for Republicans
When the House Speaker says the job is done and it’s time to end the Iran war, Republicans notice. Other GOP lawmakers, like Rep. Ashley Hinson, have already pointed to the real cost Americans are paying in higher fuel and food bills. With midterm politics and voters feeling the squeeze, Johnson’s comments show a GOP trying to meet voters where they live: their wallets. Saying “we won, now let’s finish it” is a smart political line. Saying it without a plan is not.
Strait of Hormuz, Gas Prices, and Everyday Pain
Johnson was blunt: the closed Strait of Hormuz affects commerce and drives up gas and grocery prices. That is true. The world’s energy flows through that chokepoint, and disruptions push global markets — and your fill-ups — higher. But pointing at the strait is not the same as fixing it. That leaves his statement as political theater, not policy. Republicans who want to be serious should demand a clear pathway: diplomacy, ceasefire terms, prisoner deals, or a timeline for drawing down forces. Ask the Speaker: what does “resolution” mean, exactly?
Speaker Johnson has given Republicans a chance to lead on ending a costly, disruptive conflict — and to deliver relief to American families. Now he must turn words into a plan and make sure President Trump and the administration back a strategy that protects American interests while lowering costs at home. Voters do not want vague triumphalism; they want results. The GOP should deliver both security and lower prices — and stop treating serious foreign policy like a sound bite on local TV.
