Hurricane Helene Exposes Biden’s Response As Critics Recall Katrina

Nineteen years ago, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and coastal Mississippi hard, causing a lot of damage. The storm was a Category 3 hurricane, not as strong as the Category 4 or 5 ones we don’t see too often. The city flooded mainly because it’s below sea level and the levees meant to keep water out failed.

Over 1,800 people died and there was $100 billion in property damage. The Cato Institute blamed the failures on things like confusion and fraud. President George W. Bush got a lot of heat for how he handled the disaster, with some news outlets saying it was his undoing.

Fast forward to now, Hurricane Helene hit Florida and moved north, causing a lot of destruction in Georgia and North Carolina. The media coverage of how the current President, Joe Biden, handled the disaster was plenty different than how they treated Bush during Katrina.

Former President Donald Trump visited Georgia after the hurricane, while Biden was at the beach in Delaware. Some criticized this, saying Biden should have done more to help. The Biden administration also faced backlash for cutting off communication with North Carolina residents affected by the hurricane.

It’s been noticed that the government is helping other countries a lot, while Americans affected by disasters like Hurricane Helene are left without enough aid. Critics say the Biden administration is more focused on other countries than on helping Americans in need. The media’s coverage of both President Bush during Katrina and President Biden during Helene show a clear difference in how they are portrayed.
