Whether the story is fully proven or not, it exposes how weak border security and soft diplomacy can be a real danger to our streets and our safety.

The reporting says unnamed smugglers and an unnamed Iranian official told the paper that parts of the Channel smuggling routes are controlled or used by elements linked to Iran, including logistics networks associated with the IRGC — often described in coverage as “Unit 700.” The story also says UK border teams have intercepted some suspects and are using drones, AI surveillance towers and maritime monitoring to screen arrivals. Important caveat: much of the story rests on unnamed sources, so the claims are not fully verified in public documents.
Why this matters for UK border security
Small‑boat crossings are already a political crisis and a public-safety issue. If a hostile state is exploiting those same routes, the problem moves from an immigration headache to a national security emergency. The National Security (State Threats) Act gives the government new tools to name and disrupt groups like the IRGC, but laws mean little without hard, active enforcement. Citizens deserve to know who is getting past the border and why our systems let it happen.
What should happen next
First, demand a full, transparent investigation. The newspaper should explain its sourcing to authorities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and MI5 — led by Director General Sir Ken McCallum — must give a clear public account, not soothing clichés. Parliament should back an urgent taskforce, as Shadow Security Minister Alicia Kearns has proposed, to match the legal powers already on the books with real action: more arrests, faster removals of confirmed threats, and better intelligence sharing with France and European partners.
We should treat the allegation with the seriousness it deserves while keeping a clear head about what is and isn’t proven. If Iran really is sneaking operatives in on migrant boats, this is a striking failure that must be fixed now. If the allegation proves wrong, then the inquiry will still have done a service by tightening border controls, improving screening of small boats, and reminding ministers of their duty to keep the public safe. Either way, voters should not let this story drift into the next news cycle without answers.
