Iran Names Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Threatens Europe Bases

Iran’s state media has crossed another red line. A propaganda video and comments on state television openly threatened Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and even talked about striking European military bases. This is not mere rhetoric — it is a deliberate escalation that should alarm every American and our allies.

What Tehran Said — the assassination and base threats

State-affiliated outlets in Tehran put out a video naming Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and depicting threats against him and his husband. The clip used crude smears and promised violent retribution from an alleged group called the “Yahya Movement.” At the same time, an Iranian military analyst on state TV boasted about missile ranges and said Iran could target military bases in Eastern and Western Europe if a conflict starts. That combination — naming a senior U.S. official and openly talking about strikes on allied bases — is an ugly new escalation in Tehran’s playbook.

Why this matters for U.S. national security and allies

Threats against a cabinet member are not political theater. They are threats to our people and to the rules that keep diplomats, officials, and service members safe. Europe hosts U.S. forces and command hubs. If Tehran believes it can intimidate or strike bases in the UK, Germany, or elsewhere, allied deterrence weakens. Iran also backs proxies and networks overseas, so a single message from Tehran can turn into attacks by proxy actors. We can’t pretend this is a harmless tweet or bad PR — it is a direct national-security challenge.

What President Trump should do — clear, decisive, lawful action

Washington needs a unified, tough response. That means bolstering defenses around threatened officials and bases, increasing intelligence and counterterrorism pressure on Iranian networks, and tightening sanctions and diplomatic isolation on those who issued the threats. It means working with NATO and European partners to harden facilities and to make clear there will be coordinated consequences for any attack. Tough talk alone won’t cut it; planned, lawful, and targeted measures will.

The political angle — voters and leadership matter

There’s also a political lesson here. Tehran cheered some U.S. political outcomes and has tried to sow division. Americans should ask which leaders are treating the Iranian regime as an enemy and which seem content to make excuses. Weakness invites aggression. Strong, steady leadership deters it. The president and Congress must show they are on the side of American security, not on the side of foreign tyrants celebrating discord. We should all want one thing: Iran restrained, not emboldened — and our people protected.
