JBLM Soldiers Stop Mom Who Crashed SUV and Allegedly Stabbed Kids

Two soldiers from Joint Base Lewis–McChord sprang into action on southbound I‑5 near DuPont and likely saved two young girls’ lives. Washington State Patrol says a 35‑year‑old woman from Steilacoom drove erratically, struck a semi, rolled her SUV and then allegedly stabbed or threatened the two juvenile passengers. The soldiers wrestled the knife away and restrained the driver until troopers arrived.

Soldiers’ quick action saved lives

The scene on I‑5 was chaotic: the SUV hit a left barrier, crossed lanes, struck a semi and rolled. One child, reported as 9 years old, suffered multiple broken bones and a stab wound; a 15‑year‑old was also hurt but not in life‑threatening condition. Washington State Patrol Sgt. John Dattilo called the crash and attack “shocking” and said the JBLM soldiers’ intervention likely prevented a far worse outcome. Plain and simple: passing military personnel did what ordinary bystanders sometimes wish they could do.

What investigators are focusing on

Authorities are treating this as both a crash and an assault investigation. The driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation and faces probes into suspected DUI, vehicular assault and first‑degree assault. Officials have not released the soldiers’ names, the motive, or the exact relationship between the driver and the children. Those facts matter — and we should get them — but the confirmed takeaway is that two children were badly hurt and two service members stopped additional harm.

Let’s be blunt: heroes show up in boots, not press releases. The soldiers deserve recognition, not silence. At the same time, communities deserve answers and accountability. If the woman was intoxicated or under the influence, she must face the full force of the law. If there were warning signs before this trip, those failures should be exposed and fixed. We can admire the bravery of servicemembers while demanding a system that prevents these tragedies in the first place.

Prayers for the recovery of the two girls and credit where credit is due to the soldiers who intervened. Washington State Patrol and local prosecutors should move quickly with clear charges and public updates so the public knows justice is being sought. Meanwhile, let’s not turn away from the uncomfortable questions this incident raises about safety, responsibility and the consequences when both are ignored.
