Kamala Harris recently put on a masterclass in how not to discuss immigration policy during interviews with CNN and Telemundo. Instead of addressing one of the most pressing issues for American voters, she managed to showcase just how out of touch she really is, and it wasn’t even in the entertaining “drunk relative” sort of way. Many might argue that she’s the worst candidate to emerge from the Democratic side since, well, Nancy Pelosi led the charge against her own party in a coup against the guy they couldn’t stop criticizing.
In the current political climate, immigration is akin to the economy in terms of voter concern. Yet, where other candidates might roll up their sleeves and tackle the issue head-on, Harris appears to approach it like a child reluctant to admit they were wrong about dessert. During a recent event with Anderson Cooper, it looked less like a town hall and more like a poorly executed improv exercise. Harris casually acknowledged that the border wall was a good idea but could not bring herself to actually admit that it is a plausible solution.
The traditional format of campaign interviews has become a choreographed dance of softballs without any real substance. The candidates reminisce about their lives, engage in feigned banter, and answer one tiresome ‘Gotcha!’ question before returning to their carefully crafted talking points with the grace of a deer on ice. It’s as if they are conditioned not to stray from their safe zones—essentially, they treat hard-hitting questions like they’re an unexpected spider in the bathtub. That’s the environment politicians thrive in—unless you’re Kamala Harris, who appears to struggle even there.

During her Telemundo appearance, the situation went from uncomfortable to downright cringe-worthy. Harris fumbled her way through answers, leaning heavily on tired clichés and showing the audience more of a distant idea of what might work rather than a solid plan. In comparison, it would seem Joe Biden, for all his faults, is still sharper. After all, he might ramble on, but at least he has the excuse of age and medical history—what’s Harris’ excuse? Perhaps it’s the daily struggles of solving her own internal dilemmas while battling the pressures of being the face of the party.
It’s evident that Kamala Harris may be the poster child for Democratic cognitive dissonance in the current election cycle. She fumbles around key topics without ever really landing on a solid position. As Americans gear up for the 2024 election, one can only hope that the Democrats realize how badly they’ve misstepped by allowing a leader like her to represent their party. With candidates like Harris, who constantly dodge accountability and offer little in the way of solutions, it’s easy to see why many voters will be looking elsewhere come November.
