The International Association of Fire Fighters, representing an impressive 300,000 first responders, recently left Kamala Harris feeling like a firefighter at a non-existent blaze. Her hopes for a 2024 endorsement were doused when the union decided to keep their support to themselves, a stark contrast to their quick endorsement of Joe Biden back in 2020. This snub is especially embarrassing for Harris, who has been struggling to secure substantial backing from organized labor—a feat that Biden made look easy just a few years prior. It raises the question: is she really the flame that lights the way for Democratic voters?
While in Michigan, Kamala confidently strutted to a rally at a shiny new firehouse, presumably preening for what she thought would be a grand announcement. In a classic case of a kid expecting a birthday party only to find out nobody showed up, the announcement never came. Just a day before her much-anticipated appearance, the firefighters voted not to endorse any candidate. Talk about a major faceplant! It’s like showing up to a potluck with no dish and discovering everyone else brought dessert.

In a further stinging indictment of her candidacy, even the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, historically a powerhouse of labor support, chose to remain neutral. At the same time, their members revealed that a surprising 60 percent would support Donald Trump if push came to shove. And yet, Harris struts around, expecting applause and affirmation. Her camp’s assumption that the union would rally behind her is further proof of how out of touch she has become.
On the endorsement front, however, it’s not all doom and gloom for Harris. She has managed to garner endorsements from national teachers' unions, build trade unions, and even the AFL-CIO. But with the Teamsters and the firefighters taking a pass, the contrast with Biden’s reign is glaring. It seems that the badge-wearing heroes of the fire service are more cautious about backing Harris than they were about running into burning buildings. The Michigan firefighters union leader made an appearance at Harris’s rally but did so without the ceremonial endorsement, adding salt to the already festering wound.
With the United Auto Workers’ president openly admitting that Trump might win over his members, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that Harris may very well be on the road to becoming the worst-performing Democrat among union voters. Meanwhile, Trump continues to lead by over 30 points with working-class voters. If Kamala continues to miscalculate her support from labor unions, she could very well find herself extinguished long before the election. The downward spiral from anticipated endorsement to public humiliation is a track record that can only be described as epic in its failure. The fire chief might want to start looking for a new job—one that doesn’t require such high expectations.
