Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) told MSNBC’s All In that Attorney General Todd Blanche should be impeached. Khanna says Blanche has refused to release documents tied to the Jeffrey Epstein matter, has consulted the president about prosecutions, and has otherwise shown bad judgment. That is a heavy charge. It deserves more than cable-show bravado.
Khanna’s impeachment pitch: serious charge or political theater?
Khanna pointed to court orders and a law he said he and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) passed to argue Blanche broke the law. He also claimed the Justice Department is letting politics decide who gets prosecuted and that Blanche admitted consulting the president about criminal cases. Those are the core claims behind the impeachment talk. If true, they would be alarming. But claims need proof, not just sound bites.
What impeachment would actually require
Impeaching an attorney general is not the same as shouting on TV. The House would need to pass articles of impeachment with clear evidence of “high crimes or misdemeanors.” Then the Senate would hold a trial and decide whether to remove him. That is a long, public, and messy process. Throwing out the word “impeach” on cable is easy. Producing the kind of evidence that convinces a Senate is not.
Why conservatives should be paying attention — and not cheering blindly
On one hand, Khanna’s comments play right into a conservative message: Democrats often talk about DOJ independence until it suits them. If the DOJ has been politicized, that is a real problem anyone who believes in the rule of law should oppose. On the other hand, Republicans shouldn’t celebrate an impeachment attempt unless the facts are clear. Weaponizing impeachment for political theater would only weaken the rule of law further.
At the end of the day, voters deserve clarity. If Rep. Khanna wants to lead a serious push to impeach Attorney General Todd Blanche, he needs to put forward clear evidence in public hearings — not cable-show rhetoric. If he can’t, this looks less like accountability and more like politics as usual. Either way, this debate will now be part of the campaign season storyline voters will remember come November.
