Over the weekend, a swarm of protesters took over Chicago’s Pritzker Park to make a ruckus about a new policy targeting immigrants living in the city’s sanctuary shelters. The main instigator behind this policy is none other than Mayor Brandon Johnson, who plans to enforce a strict 60-day stay limit at temporary shelters due to the anticipated nice weather. This means that come March 16, immigrants may find themselves facing eviction from these sanctuaries.

Mollified by the mayor’s actions, protesters at Pritzker Park clamored for a change, crying out, “Refugees are welcome here,” and brandishing signs with slogans like “Stop the Evictions” and “Brandon do Better.” They were certainly a lively bunch!
Miguel Alvelo Rivera, head honcho at the Latino Union of Chicago, bemoaned the looming evictions, asserting that people will be flung onto the streets and left to fend for themselves. There was even talk of “new neighbors” facing the boot from the shelters, with nurse volunteer Mimi Guiracocha emphasizing the need for more funding and improved living conditions inside the shelters. She adamantly insisted on increasing the money poured into subsidized housing and programs while ensuring all necessary services are covered.
The report also features a heart-wrenching tale from Reina Isabel Jerez Garcia, a Colombian immigrant living in fear of being cast into the streets, and questioning the abundance of wealth in Chicago, yet the scarcity of support for all those in need.
Mayor Johnson, on the other hand, has defended the policy, arguing that its primary aim is to find alternative housing for the affected immigrants. He assured that those affected would have a chance to reenter the shelter system and move toward a life of sustainability.
