Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has once again put Mexico’s interests ahead of the American people by refusing to attend his impeachment hearing. The House Homeland Security Committee, led by Rep. Mark Green, has been trying to hold Mayorkas accountable for his mishandling of the unprecedented border crisis, but he has continuously dodged their requests for testimony.
Despite the committee’s efforts to work with Mayorkas’s office to secure his testimony, the secretary has defied Congress and refused to show up to address his handling of the crisis and his failure to enforce America’s immigration laws. This pattern of behavior shows that accountability and transparency are clearly not high on his priority list. The American people deserve better than a secretary who refuses to answer for his actions.
It’s certainly telling that one of the primary excuses Secretary Mayorkas gave us for declining to appear next week is that he must host a delegation of Mexican officials. /1

Not only has Mayorkas snubbed the committee, but last year, a bill was passed in the House to reduce his salary due to his poor job performance during the influx of immigrants at the southern border. The situation at the U.S.-Mexico border has reached unprecedented levels, with over 302,000 people processed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in December alone. Since Biden took office, over 10 million immigrants have reportedly entered the country illegally, the highest number recorded in that amount of time of any administration.
It is deeply troubling that Mayorkas continues to prioritize meetings with Mexican officials over addressing the concerns and questions of the American people. With the crisis at the border only escalating, it’s clear that Mayorkas’s actions are not serving the best interests of the nation, and it’s time for him to be held accountable for his failures. The American people deserve a secretary who puts their needs first and is willing to provide much-needed transparency and explanations for the ongoing crisis at the border.
