The mainstream media continues to show their staggering ability to overlook major events, particularly when those events seem to revolve around Donald Trump. On July 13, the former president narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. It is as if this shocking story, which could have been a serious election game-changer, has been brushed aside like crumbs from a forgotten lunch. One can’t help but wonder how the narrative would have shifted had Joe Biden still been in the race. The media would likely have turned a simple hand gesture from Trump into front-page news and gleefully dissected Biden’s political demise.
But no, instead of focusing on the nearly fatal incident involving Trump, Politico has chosen to ruminate on the security risks surrounding Kamala Harris, presumably because she’s the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee. With the Secret Service already under scrutiny for their inept handling of the situation surrounding Trump’s rally, one can’t help but marvel at how quickly they’ve pivoted to the “dangers” Harris faces merely because of her identity.
The narrative being spun is that Harris, as a woman and person of color, faces increased threats. While it’s true that various public figures face challenges based on their status, claiming that Harris is now the real victim is just outlandish. She might be the last person in the room to get sympathy when the Secret Service has just had to pick up the pieces after an actual assassination attempt. And yet, here’s the media, anointing her the darling of the narrative without a blink of an eye for Trump.
Jeff James, a former Secret Service employee, chimed in with his take on the situation, insinuating a “closed mindset” amongst certain voter demographics when it comes to electability. Perhaps the real closed-mindedness lies in failing to recognize that a fellow American, a former president, was shot at. Instead of investigating how the nearly-assassinated Trump grabbed headlines, these outlets would rather discuss how Harris needs an extra protective detail. Maybe someone should remind the Secret Service that it’s better to protect the present than worry about the perceptions of the future.

Until a thorough investigation into why a clear line of sight wasn’t secured at the rally is conducted, one can only wonder about the lapse in protection that could have led to such a terrifying moment. Questions swirl around the lone gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, and whether he really acted alone. But instead of finding answers, the media has opted to distract the public with tales of potential hazards that face a woman with power, all while forgetting that an assassin’s bullet recently whizzed past Trump’s head. It seems that in this world of political theater, actual events are easily overshadowed by crafted narratives—something that should disturb every American citizen regardless of their political leanings.
