Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk just sounded a loud alarm: allied intelligence says Russia may be preparing missile and drone strikes aimed not just at Ukraine, but at countries that back Kyiv. This is a specific warning, based on NATO, U.S. and Ukrainian assessments, that Moscow could try to disguise attacks as “accidents” to test NATO’s will. Dismiss it at your peril — or at least don’t pretend the problem will vanish if we wait politely.
What Tusk actually warned about
Tusk told Poland’s parliament the intelligence picture is “very consistent and convincing” and warned there is a “real risk” that drones or other projectiles could enter the territory of one or several eastern-flank countries and even cause damage. He said allied briefings — including material from CIA Director John Ratcliffe and other services — point to possible hybrid operations where Moscow masks attacks as accidental. To be clear: this is an intelligence assessment, not a public forensic dossier. Governments don’t always publish raw radar tracks and wreckage photos, but that does not make the threat any less real.
Why this matters for NATO, Britain and the eastern flank
This isn’t academic. Poland scrambled jets and briefly closed airports after cross-border strikes near the Polish border. Faster, jet-powered drones cut interception time and raise the chances something slips through. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is already pressing for higher defense spending, and Britain plans to boost NATO-qualifying spending toward 2.7% of GDP soon. That’s progress, but talk of hitting a 3.5% goal years from now sounds a lot like telling a house on fire to “please consider a budget plan.”
A conservative plan: deterrence, readiness and common sense
First, allies must share classified intelligence more widely so national leaders can make fast, clear decisions. Second, intercept before anything reaches NATO airspace — not after the smoke clears and someone offers an “accident” explanation. Boost short- and long-range air defenses, invest in counter-drone systems and radar that can track fast jet drones, and authorize clear rules of engagement for pre-emptive interception. Third, stop pretending that a long timetable for defense spending is a plan. If deterrence matters, show it with money, bases and patrols — not press releases and promises for 2035.
Final warning — and a simple choice
Donald Tusk’s warning should prod Western leaders out of complacency. Russia’s tactic of probing with hybrid attacks and plausible deniability is cheap and dangerous. The choice is basic: prepare and deter now, or learn the hard way what “accident” looks like when it hits a NATO ally. Conservatives who care about national security should push for better intelligence sharing, faster intercept rules and real defense spending — not polite speeches and gradualism. That’s the responsible path. Anything less is wishful thinking.
