Flanked by a kit of colorful signs and flags, these protests took center stage outside the Stock Exchange, as if Wall Street needed another reason to roll its eyes. The whole event is proving to be an awkward political moment for Democrats, who are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their base under control while navigating the tumultuous waters of Middle Eastern politics.
Among the crowd was a demonstrator calling himself Nas, who threw down the gauntlet on the Biden administration, casually suggesting that Muslims should band together at the polls to “punish” the Democrats. He expressed his intent to vote for Donald Trump instead. It’s almost like Democrats are being told they’re not wanted at their own party’s party—how quaint. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is busy marking the anniversary with remembrance events, reminding voters that, under his leadership, such atrocities might have been avoided. Nothing like a little nostalgia for the days when American foreign policy didn’t seem to operate like a tumble dryer stuck on “spin cycle.”
Adding to the Democratic disarray, the recently rebranded Abandon Harris campaign has now thrown its support behind the Green Party’s Jill Stein for the upcoming presidential race. It’s as if someone dropped a live grenade into the Democratic Party’s strategy meeting, and the pieces are still flying in every direction. While the campaign aims to rally disillusioned voters—specifically members of the Muslim American community—it’s hard to shake the image of a ship listing dangerously to one side while its captain argues about the importance of the ship’s aesthetic appeal.
