In a tragic turn of events, the highly acclaimed Miami street artist David Le Batard, better known as “LEBO,” has sadly passed away at the age of 50. The heart-wrenching news was shared by his older brother, Dan Le Batard, during a recent episode of his podcast. Although the cause of death was not disclosed, the loss has undoubtedly left a void in the artistic community.
LEBO’s vibrant and whimsical artistry had caught the attention of big-name brands such as Google, Redbull, Bacardi, and Ferrari, to name a few. His distinctive style filled his brother’s studio and captivated both residents and visitors of Miami. One of his most notable works was the iconic “Welcome to Miami Beach” mural, which holds the title of being the largest in the history of Miami Beach. Additionally, LEBO had established his own showroom in Wynwood and a studio in Miami Beach, solidifying his presence in the city’s artistic landscape.
Dan Le Batard expressed the profound emotional turmoil he witnessed as his brother’s health deteriorated over the course of a year. He shared his struggles with grief, explaining how the agony began when LEBO received his diagnosis, causing him to slowly and painfully wither away. Dan described this process as witnessing a brilliant spirit being consumed by an invisible poison. It is a devastating loss that will forever weigh heavily on his heart.
Notably, Dan also spoke of the profound impact this tragedy had on their parents, who had fled from Cuba as exiles. As the realization set in that their youngest son would precede them in death, Dan grappled with an inconceivable sorrow. He recounted a haunting moment when his father whispered to LEBO, “We’ll see you soon,” a poignant farewell that pierced Dan’s soul.
In his final moments, Dan found solace in being by his brother’s side, comforting him and assuring him that it was okay to let go. Despite the overwhelming sorrow, there was a sense of grace and freedom as LEBO peacefully transitioned. His suffering had come to an end, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.
