On KUOW, host Libby Denkmann asked Perez if recent Democratic Socialist victories meant the party was leaving her “old‑school Democrat” brand behind. Instead of a clear rebuttal, Perez dodged. She talked about “frustration” and “majority opinions” and refused to name or reject socialism outright. That kind of answer looks less like nuance and more like a political pause button when the cameras are watching.

Federal Election Commission filings show a joint fundraising vehicle called the MGP Victory Fund routed roughly around $2 million into Perez’s campaign coffers this cycle. That fund lists Marie for Congress and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee among its participants. Perez has also been on the state party’s executive committee since 2020 — the very body that produced a platform full of policies popular with Democratic Socialists: single‑payer ideas for health care, publicly owned utilities, rent controls, tuition‑free college, and other big government blueprints.
Republicans Pounced — And With Good Reason
GOP operatives were quick to call out the disconnect. The NRCC called Perez “too spineless” to confront a socialist takeover, and her Republican opponent, Senator John Braun, hammered her record and party ties. Whether you like the rhetoric or not, the critics are pointing to a simple fact: you can brand yourself a centrist, but if your fundraising and party roles line up with the left wing, voters will see through it.
Why This Matters for WA‑03 Voters
This exchange is more than a soundbite. It shows how candidates dodge hard questions while the machinery behind them keeps humming. Voters in WA‑03 should ask Perez to explain why she won’t name the ideology that her state party platform and joint fundraising backers embrace. If she truly is a moderate, she can say so plainly, refuse the far‑left labels, and return any money tied to extreme policy pushes. If she won’t, voters have a right to assume her “moderation” is political theater — and to act accordingly at the ballot box.
