Senate Democrats are focusing on hot-button issues in hopes of rallying voters for the upcoming election. Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Democrats have honed in on reproductive rights as a key motivator for voters. Their attention is now on pushing for legislation related to birth control and in vitro fertilization, aiming to force Senate Republicans into difficult positions on popular treatments.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is leading the charge on these issues. According to reports, a group of Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Patty Murray, is working on plans to bring the matters to the Senate floor. These topics have gained attention, with 70% of people supporting access to IVF and 91% in favor of free and widely available birth control.

The Alabama Supreme Court’s decision recognizing embryos as children has put Republicans in a tough spot, forcing many to voice disagreement with the ruling. Vulnerable Senator Bob Casey believes these reproductive matters, including abortion, will be significant issues in the upcoming elections, creating a divide between the two parties.
Democrats are hoping to replicate their success from previous elections by making abortion a central topic, which helped them retain control of the Senate in the face of an expected “red wave” and limited GOP gains in the House during the midterms.
To further add pressure, Democrats are also targeting Republicans on border security, an issue the GOP typically emphasizes. Schumer has announced plans to hold a vote on a bipartisan border security bill, despite resistance from Republicans. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, currently rivals in the election, have taken opposing stances on this bill, adding to the contentious atmosphere.
With these approaches, Senate Democrats are aiming to steer the conversation towards reproductive rights, border security, and other critical issues to gain voter support ahead of the upcoming elections.
