Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio has struck again, taking a swing at Vice President Kamala Harris during a campaign pit stop in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Standing on the tarmac next to Air Force Two—yes, the Obama-era plane that the Vice President now gets to call her own—Vance had a field day pointing out Harris’ glaring absence from the press circuit since she has become the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Harris made headlines earlier this week when she tapped Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Fittingly, they held a rally in Eau Claire, hoping to rouse the many specters of voters who might be excited about a ticket whose idea of campaigning is to hunker down with a teleprompter and make limited public appearances. As Vance approached the press, he couldn’t resist making a cheeky remark about trying to get a glimpse of the plane he hopes will soon become his personal ride. But his true highlight was calling out Harris for her radio silence—going 17 days without answering a single question from reporters.

The Senator inquired if anyone had the mystery solved on why Harris was pulling a Houdini act from the press. In a stroke of humor, he noted that a real campaign would probably be a better fate than an eternity of avoiding the very journalists who are supposed to hold them accountable. Vance emphasized that the American people deserve better than a basement-based campaign. After all, it seems like Harris is more comfortable behind a curtain than addressing the reality of what it takes to lead the nation—or even just to speak to grassroots journalists.
Interestingly, while Harris prefers to shy away from press gatherings, she did manage to squeeze in a brief statement recently after she and President Biden welcomed back Americans freed by Russia in a prisoner exchange. But one speech in a whirlwind-filled week hardly makes up for the countless opportunities she’s missed to actually discuss pressing issues that affect the everyday American.
To top it all off, the latest polling shows Harris clinging to a razor-thin lead over former President Donald Trump. The Real Clear Polling data indicates she has a lead of a mere 0.5%. When adding independent candidates into the mix, that measly lead only widens by a fraction. It looks like Vance might have a great deal to smile about if he keeps critiquing the absence of real campaigning among the Democrats. After all, if Harris continues with her old strategy of hiding from questioning, she might just be handing the keys to the White House straight to the other side without even a fight.
