Trump Faces Cash Drain as Defamation Trial Heats Up

The upcoming trial in Manhattan has Republicans buzzing as jury selection starts to determine just how much money former President Donald Trump will have to cough up in the defamation lawsuit filed against him by former Elle columnist E. Jean Carroll. The court will ask jurors to decide on the amount Trump will have to pay for allegedly defaming Carroll after she accused him of rape.

It’s no secret that Trump, who is eyeing another run for the presidency in 2024, has stirred up controversy with his outspoken denials and accusations against Carroll. He vehemently denied the accusations, asserting that he had never even met Carroll and dismissing her as “not my type.” Trump didn’t hold back, claiming Carroll was simply using his name to sell her book and accusing her of being part of a political witch hunt hellbent on ruining his future political aspirations.

The lawsuit, filed in 2019, alleges that Trump’s verbal attacks and denials damaged Carroll’s reputation. Although the statute of limitations for sexual assault had expired at the time of the initial filing, new legislation in 2022 allowed survivors of sexual assault or rape to file civil suits within one year. Carroll wasted no time and was among the first to take advantage of the new law, receiving a $5 million award in the initial case, which is currently under appeal.

The current trial will focus on determining damages for the remarks made by Trump, with his legal team arguing against measures that would require him to acknowledge his guilt or innocence. Judge Kaplan has already ruled that Trump is not allowed to tell the jury that he did not rape Carroll and that any testimony suggesting otherwise is off-limits.

As the trial kicks off, the tension is palpable, with Trump’s legal team pushing back, even attempting to delay the proceedings by citing the need for Trump to attend his mother-in-law’s funeral. With both sides squaring off, the trial promises to be a high-stakes showdown in the legal battle between Trump and Carroll.
