After the former president’s remarks, Republican lawmakers swiftly rallied to defend Rep. Chip Roy, rejecting Trump’s label of him as a RINO (Republican in name only). One of Roy’s staunch supporters, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, affirmed the Texan’s dedication to conservative values and denounced efforts to intimidate him.
Tensions between Mr. Roy and Mr. Trump have been simmering for some time, with Roy’s decision to certify the 2020 election results and his criticism of the former president’s actions following the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol protest being sources of contention. Additionally, during Roy’s bid for the House Republican Conference chairmanship in 2021, Trump publicly questioned Roy’s capabilities and endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik for the position, which she ultimately secured.
Despite these challenges, Rep. Roy has found support in his endorsement of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the Republican presidential nomination.
