Their mutual admiration was made evident during Trump’s visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, where he hinted at the possibility of Abbott taking over the position of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), following McConnell’s announcement of stepping down from his role.

Despite the Biden administration’s policy of keeping the border open, Abbott has taken significant steps to tackle the surge of illegal immigration, including using state resources to transport immigrants to Democratic “sanctuary cities” and deploying the Texas National Guard to protect the area.
