Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur, has come out swinging against the Department of Justice’s case against former President Donald Trump, calling it an “un-American” use of the Espionage Act. Ramaswamy argues that while Trump may have made a bad judgment, it does not amount to a crime and that the Espionage Act, under which Trump is charged, is the most un-American statute in history. He believes that this law is being used to stifle political opposition, echoing concerns from other conservatives who believe that Trump is being unfairly targeted.

The trial for Trump’s case is set to commence on May 20, 2024. Ramaswamy announced earlier this year that he would seek to repeal the Espionage Act if elected president and has been vocal in his criticism of the law, claiming it is often used as a weapon against dissent. He argues that the Presidential Records Act, which gives the president sole authority over which records to take upon leaving office, was not mentioned in the indictment against Trump, further suggesting that the Espionage Act is being misused.
Ramaswamy, who is currently in third place in the GOP primary poll average, also expressed concerns about the direction the country is headed, saying that he does not want to see the nation become divided. He voiced his opposition to using vengeance-driven prosecution to eliminate Trump from the race, stating that it would be easier for him if Trump were eliminated but that, on principle, he is against such actions. Ramaswamy plans to pardon Trump if he becomes president, believing that it would help reunite the country.
Overall, Ramaswamy is running on an “America First 2.0” platform and has offered unprecedented clarity on how he would advance that agenda. He aims to hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for COVID-19, end the weaponization of the government, and achieve U.S. independence from China. While he currently trails behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the GOP primary polls, Ramaswamy is making his mark with his outspoken views and promises to bring all Americans together.
