Kevin McCarthy, the House Republican leader, warned several Democrats that their jobs would be in danger if he becomes the next speaker of the House.
In response, McCarthy said that he would be removing several prominent Democrats from their committees. These include Ilhan Omar, Adam Schiff, and Eric Swalwell.
In January, McCarthy said that he would remove Omar and Swalwell from the House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees. And it now appears that he is on the verge of carrying out this promise.
According to McCarthy, these individuals were removed from the committees due to their support for the Steele Dossier and Omar's antisemitic statements.
He also said that he would remove Adam Schiff from the Intelligence Committee. He noted that the California congressman had repeatedly lied about his position on the issue. He additionally said that he would not allow Omar to be on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
According to McCarthy, Swalwell's position on the committee was hurt due to his association with a Chinese spy. He also noted that he would not allow the California congressman to be on Intel due to his security clearance issue.
Although McCarthy is expected to become the next House speaker, some Republicans have expressed their concerns about his potential role as the Democratic Party's political hostage. For instance, Andy Biggs and Matt Gaetz noted that he would not be able to secure a majority of the votes for speaker.
