Last month, there were reports of a horrible incident in Europe involving a group of young people committing a series of violent and abusive acts against a 14-year-old girl. The boyfriend of the victim, who was also 14, took her to a wooded area in West Flanders, Belgium, where he and several other boys allegedly raped and assaulted her. The attackers, all under 16 years old, even filmed the crimes and posted images on social media. Reports indicated that the attackers were all of Somalian or North African descent.
Due to the seriousness of the case, there have been discussions about whether the 16-year-old involved in the incident should be tried as an adult. However, under Belgian law, the attackers, being minors, cannot be publicly identified, and full criminal responsibility starts at the age of 18.

It is believed that the victim’s shame and embarrassment initially prevented her from reporting the crimes. Additionally, there has been concern about the cultural diversity of the attackers and their lack of desire to assimilate into the host country’s values.
