President Biden is playing the blame game with Russia again, folks. This time, it’s over Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who got slapped with a 16-year sentence in a Russian court for allegedly spying. Biden insists Gershkovich is as innocent as a lamb, claiming he was nabbed just for being an American journalist in Moscow.
Biden, ever the crusader for press freedom, rattled off about Russia’s wrongful detention of Gershkovich, comparing journalism to Mother Teresa’s charitable works. Then he threw in some patriotic flair, vowing to champion press freedom in Russia and around the globe—because, of course, the world is waiting on Biden to swoop in like Captain America.

It’s not just Gershkovich on Biden’s radar. He’s also using this moment to lament about other detained Americans, including former Marine Paul Whelan. One has to wonder if Biden’s soft and diplomatic pleas are meant to distract from more pressing issues back home.
Gershkovich’s arrest in March 2023 in Yekaterinburg is being painted as nothing more than a KGB-style maneuver by Putin to collect American pawns for future trades. They say the guy was spying for the CIA, but Biden’s acting like it’s a chapter out of a fairy tale. The real joke here is the Left’s habitual underestimation of foreign threats while overestimating their own sanctity.
Topping it all off, Biden’s heartfelt message about keeping Gershkovich in his prayers sounds just quaint enough to ignore the fact that action speaks louder than words. Maybe next time, Biden could try using a bit more muscle and a bit less sermonizing when dealing with autocrats.
