The leftist administration of President Joe Biden once again failed to take action against Iran’s aggressive military tactics at the United Nations in October. Despite Iran’s involvement in the massacre of over 1,200 people in Israel and a direct missile assault on the country, the Biden administration did not renew expiring sanctions on Iran’s drone and ballistic missile production. Instead of showing strength and resolve, the administration opted to play nice with a regime that poses a direct threat to international security.

The Iranian military, emboldened by the inaction of the Biden administration, launched over 300 drones and missiles towards Israeli territory. While the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted over 99 percent of the threats, the attack still resulted in one casualty. The Iranian military, always eager to exaggerate their own prowess, declared the failed assault as a “success,” with parts of the Iranian government even allowing celebrations over the attack.
This failure to act by the Biden administration is part of a larger pattern of weakness in dealing with Iran. The Obama-era Iran nuclear deal, which the current administration seems keen on upholding, has done nothing to curb Iran’s aggressive behavior. Instead, Iran has consistently violated the agreement and has persistently worked to develop its ballistic missile and drone capabilities.
As part of the 2015 nuclear deal, the United Nations Security Council imposed limits on Iran’s ballistic missiles and drone programs, with an expiration date set for October 18, 2023. The Biden administration, however, took no action to extend these sanctions, choosing instead to announce a new series of limited sanctions on specific Iranian individuals and organizations. This weak response only serves to embolden the Iranian regime and fails to address the broader threats posed by Iran’s aggressive behavior.
It is evident that Iran poses a significant threat to international peace and security, yet the Biden administration continues to tiptoe around the issue. While Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed to utilize every tool available to counter Iran’s development and proliferation of dangerous weapons, the administration’s actions fall short of demonstrating a strong and decisive stance against Iran’s aggressive behavior.
In the face of this aggression, the government of Israel has committed to defending itself from its terrorist neighbor and building a regional coalition to hold Iran accountable for its actions. It’s clear that the Biden administration’s weak approach to dealing with Iran only serves to embolden a regime that poses a direct threat to global stability.
