Joe Biden, the gaffe-prone grandpa of the White House, found himself defending his mental sharpness yet again. It would be hilarious if it weren’t so tragic that the leader of the free world needs to reassure the public he can still find his way to the Oval Office without a GPS. Biden sat down for an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, presumably during one of his rare lucid moments, and tried to calm the storm of concerns over his age and mental fitness.
In the interview, Holt didn’t shy away from the tough questions, pushing Biden on whether he’s too long in the tooth for the job. Biden’s retort was that he’s just three years older than Trump, and his mental agility is “pretty damn good.” It’s always amusing when Biden brags about his accomplishments, as one wonders if he even remembers what year it is. But hey, he’s confident he’s achieved more than any president in recent memory—which must be news to anyone familiar with a calendar.
Biden admitted that people have legitimate concerns about his age. He mentioned being 81 and wondered aloud what people will think when he’s 83 or 84. It’s almost as if Biden himself is shocked at how old and out-of-touch he appears. Perhaps someone should remind him that this role isn’t designed for someone who treats afternoon naps as strategic planning sessions.
Meanwhile, Biden conceded he might have mishandled his words a bit. When questioned about previously putting a “bullseye” on Trump, he admitted it was a mistake. Yet, without missing a beat, he pivoted to urging Americans to aim for Trump’s agenda, only switching the wording to “crosshairs.” One has to give credit where it’s due; it takes a special kind of skill to consistently put one’s foot in one’s mouth.

Amid all this, Biden has slowed down his attacks on Trump, probably a wise move given recent events. Nevertheless, Republicans like Trump’s sidekick, Senator J.D. Vance, have been quick to point out that Biden’s inflammatory language could have emboldened the shooter in the assassination attempt on Trump. They have a point—when the president speaks, people listen, sometimes with disastrous consequences.
