President Joe Biden took the opportunity to praise the late former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor at her funeral on Tuesday. O’Connor, who was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, passed away on December 1 at the age of 93. The funeral, held at the Washington National Cathedral, was a time for Biden to celebrate O’Connor’s supposed commitment to setting aside political differences and advancing equality for all people.

During his remarks, Biden expressed his supposed love for O’Connor “on behalf of a truly grateful nation.” He reminisced about her confirmation process, specifically focusing on her stance on issues like the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Biden claimed that O’Connor was a “pioneer” responsible for “breaking down barriers, legal and political,” and for opening doors for women. He also thanked O’Connor for valuing civility among people, regardless of their political beliefs.
However, what Biden failed to acknowledge in his tribute to O’Connor was her true conservative legacy. O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan and was known for her conservative values. She was not the liberal icon that President Biden tried to paint her as during his eulogy. In fact, O’Connor was often a swing vote on the Court, grappling with cases in a way that often reflected her conservative values.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor described O’Connor as a “life role model” during a ceremony at the Supreme Court, emphasizing O’Connor’s impact as a legal and political figure. O’Connor’s son, Jay O’Connor, also eulogized his mother during the funeral, highlighting her remarkable legacy as a conservative trailblazer in the legal world.
