In the midst of one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the southeastern United States in recent memory, President Joe Biden has once again demonstrated a staggering lack of leadership. With Hurricane Helene wreaking havoc across several states, including a particularly brutal impact on western North Carolina, Biden chose to spend his weekend lounging at the beach, leaving a trail of devastation in his absence.
The president’s initial response to the crisis was underwhelming at best. When pressed about his thoughts on the victims of the hurricane, Biden’s flippant comment about having “given everything that we have” fell flat, especially coming from a man who seemed more concerned with his tan than the dire situation affecting countless Americans. When further questioned about whether more federal resources could be deployed, his curt reply of “no” betrays an unsettling indifference to the plight of those suffering.
Once back in the White House following his sandy getaway, Biden delivered a speech that promised federal assistance “as long as it takes,” a sentiment that rings hollow in light of the minimal aid that has reportedly reached those in distress. While he was presumably on vacation, residents were struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives after the storm, and the president’s assurances did little to reassure them.
The real kicker came when a reporter had the audacity to ask Biden why he and Vice President Kamala Harris were absent from the White House during this critical time. Biden’s abrasive defense—claiming he was “commanding” the situation via telephone—showed more defensiveness than command. It’s hard to believe that anyone would find solace in the idea that while they were suffering, their leader was dialing into conference calls from the comfort of his beach chair.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has also been notably absent, opting instead for photo opportunities that do little more than serve her political image. Her recent staged photo, supposedly showing her being “briefed by FEMA,” featured a headset that wasn’t even plugged in, and her notes appeared blank—an all-too-fitting metaphor for the Biden administration’s botched response to the crisis. Instead of engaging with the real needs of the community, her focus remained firmly on fundraising among the elite, far removed from the hardships facing everyday Americans.
It’s become increasingly apparent that under Biden’s leadership, empty promises and photo ops have replaced genuine assistance and decisive action. As victims of Hurricane Helene continue to face devastation, one can only hope that help arrives in ample amounts—not just in November, when many of these leaders could find themselves out of a job, but right now, when people really need it.
